In practice

A lender became a fintech platform

Fractional CTO · Lending → Fintech

At MG Group, I led the technical work behind the move from branch-based lending to a digital product. The work covered product, architecture, and delivery:

  • Break the monolith into cloud services and serverless functions where that reduced release risk.
  • Change delivery practices until deployments took minutes instead of days; availability reached 99.9%.
  • Build a mobile app and marketplace that connected car dealerships directly with buyers.
  • Extend the credit-risk engine so the business could make better lending decisions for people without traditional banking histories.

The company later sold a minority stake to an insurance group.

The job changes with the company

CTO · MateBio (UCSF spin-off)

Turning biomedical data into a product

MateBio had biomedical knowledge in Neo4j, but researchers still needed a practical way to explore it. I designed a GraphRAG system that turns natural-language questions into traceable Cypher queries, with entity recognition and confidence scoring. We added graph analytics and deployed across AWS and GCP. Lab researchers can explore biological relationships without learning the graph model first.

Director of Engineering · Cascade

Making distributed engineering easier to run

At Cascade, I led cross-functional teams that included engineers in Argentina and worked on the global Product Leadership Team. I introduced engineering metrics, built the career framework, and used the Balance Framework to make investment choices visible. That made capacity and delivery trade-offs easier to explain to Sales and CX teams, and to clients across the US, Europe, and the Middle East.

Different domains, recurring problems

Lead & Software Architect · gA (acquired by Globant)

At gA, later acquired by Globant, I designed systems for Johnson & Johnson, Grupo Modelo, Banco del Bajío, and Louis Dreyfus, among many others. The domains included banking, lending, trading, and education. The job went beyond system design:

  • Design service-oriented architectures and business processes that distributed teams could operate.
  • Hire and develop teams around the problem they had to solve.
  • Stay close enough to delivery to see whether the design survived production. That work led to repeat engagements.
