Fractional CTO Cost & Rates
Real pricing from someone who actually does this — not a directory averaging strangers' rates. Monthly retainers, no hourly billing, and the four things that move the price.

Two tiers. Same person. The difference is whether you have a tech lead already or want me running the engineering function.
Advisory
$5K-8K/month
Your team builds. I guide. Best when you have a tech lead but need a senior strategic voice in the room.
- Weekly strategy sessions with your leadership team
- Architecture reviews and decision support
- Hiring help: senior eng interviews and reference checks
- Board prep and investor-facing technical conversations
Embedded
$10K-15K/month
I run your engineering function. Best when AI or product is core and you don't have a senior tech leader in-house.
- Everything in Advisory, plus...
- Direct team management — 1:1s, performance, fires
- Roadmap ownership, vendor calls, on-call decisions
- Cancel anytime, two-week notice
All engagements start with a free 30-minute call — no pitch deck, just an honest read on whether this fits.
I Don't Sell Hours
Most fractional CTO listings advertise hourly rates: $150/hour, $300/hour, billed in 15-minute increments. I don't.
Hourly engagements are mostly theater. The work that actually moves your business — decisions made in your Slack at 11pm, knowing your engineering team well enough to fire the wrong hire, being in the room when an investor asks about your tech stack — doesn't fit in 30-minute increments.
Every engagement here is a monthly retainer or a fixed-fee project. If you only need 2 hours of advice on a one-off architecture question, I'm not your person — find an advisor on Mentorcruise or book a tech assessment instead.
The clients who get the most value from me are the ones who stop counting hours and start asking what's the right thing to do.
What Changes the Price
Four levers move you between $5K and $15K. None of them are hours.
1 Scope of responsibility
Advisor in the room ≠ owner of the function. Owning team management, hiring, and on-call decisions is dramatically more work than reviewing architecture.
2 Stage of the company
Pre-seed gets architecture-from-scratch. Series A pays for political navigation, hiring senior engineers, and surviving board scrutiny. Different problems, different cost.
3 Domain complexity
A SaaS CRUD app and a regulated fintech with audit requirements are not the same engagement. Compliance, scale, and specialized stacks (GenAI, real-time systems, healthcare) shift the price.
4 Geography of the CTO
A US-based fractional CTO with the same experience runs $300–$500/hour ($20K+/month). I'm based in Argentina, working remote-first with US clients in overlapping time zones. Same caliber, half the price.
Fractional vs Full-Time CTO
The real cost comparison — including the things companies forget to count.
| Fractional CTO | Full-Time CTO | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | $5K-15K | $17K-25K (salary loaded) |
| Annual all-in cost | $60K-180K | $250K-350K + benefits |
| Equity dilution | 0% | ~1% |
| Time to start | 1-2 weeks | 3-6 months of search |
| Risk if it doesn't work | 2-week notice | 3-6 months severance |
| Hours per week | 10-20 hrs (scalable up) | 40+ hrs, exclusive |
| Best for | Pre-seed → Series A | Series B+, AI-core companies at scale |
A fractional CTO costs roughly 40% of a full-time CTO and lets you swap in 14 days. The trade-off is exclusivity — I have other clients and no equity stake. For most companies pre-Series-B, that trade-off is the right one.
Why LATAM-Based Fractional CTOs Cost Less
The honest answer: cost of living. A senior fractional CTO in San Francisco runs $300–$500/hour, or roughly $20K+/month. The same caliber of experience based in Argentina, working remotely with US and Canadian clients in overlapping time zones, runs $5K–$15K/month.
The work is identical when it's remote-first. The deliverables are identical. The English is fluent. The US business norms (NDAs, IP assignment, structured engagements) are the same.
What's different is what the rate has to cover. A US-based consultant pays US rent, US health insurance, US taxes. A LATAM-based consultant doesn't. That cost differential is your savings.
If you'd prefer someone in your time zone for cultural reasons, that's valid — and you'll pay for it. If you want senior leadership at a price that won't sink your runway, this is what that looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a fractional CTO cost per month?
A fractional CTO typically costs $5,000–$15,000 per month on retainer. Advisory engagements (10–12 hrs/week) run $5K–$8K/month. Embedded leadership engagements (where the fractional CTO runs the engineering function) run $10K–$15K/month. The exact cost depends on scope, stage of the company, and whether the role includes team management.
Why don't you offer hourly fractional CTO rates?
Hourly engagements don't deliver real change. The work that matters as a fractional CTO — decisions made in your Slack at 11pm, knowing your team well enough to fire the wrong hire — doesn't fit into 30-minute increments. Every engagement here is a monthly retainer or a project-based deliverable. Clients who want 2 hours of advice are better served by an advisor on Mentorcruise.
Is a fractional CTO worth it for an early-stage startup?
For most early-stage startups, yes. A fractional CTO at $5K–$15K/month is 30–50% of a full-time CTO ($200K–$300K loaded annual cost), with no equity dilution and no severance risk. The trade-off is exclusivity: a fractional CTO has other clients and no equity stake, but they make the strategic and architectural decisions that determine whether your tech stack survives the next 12 months.
Why do US-based fractional CTOs charge more than LATAM-based ones?
Cost of living, primarily. A senior fractional CTO based in the US typically charges $300–$500/hour (or equivalent monthly rates of $20K+). The same caliber of experience based in LATAM, working remotely with US clients, runs $150–$250/hour equivalent ($5K–$15K/month). The work is identical when it's remote-first; the difference is geography, not capability.
What's the difference between Advisory and Embedded fractional CTO engagements?
Advisory ($5K–$8K/month) is for companies that already have a tech lead. The fractional CTO provides strategy, architecture reviews, hiring help, and board-level input. Embedded ($10K–$15K/month) is when the fractional CTO runs the engineering function: team management, roadmap ownership, vendor calls, hiring, on-call decisions. Embedded clients don't have a senior tech leader in-house.
